The International Potato Center (CIP) is seeking to recruit a dynamic and experienced Agronomist on a consultancy basis.
The Position: The Consultant will provide support to sweetpotato and potato agronomy research activities of CIP in Rwanda.
Key responsibilities:
- Provide support to decentralized vine multipliers (DVMs) to source sufficient quantities of clean foundation material of farmer preferred OFSP varieties for further multiplication.
- Adapt the Seed Tracker tool to sweetpotato, and apply the tool to map and register all DVMs, establish their status (active or inactive), supply capacity (area under multiplication, estimated vine production) and estimated demand for vines by institutional buyers in the season starting March 2021.
- Select at least three priority sweetpotato growing districts for dissemination of OFSP planting material, by CIP or its partners.
- Identify and select DVMs in target districts for further multiplication of clean OFSP planting material and provide material (net tunnels, clean starter material) and technical support to increase the availability of clean planting material in season 2021B.
- Provide technical backstopping to partners for the implementation of multi-location potato fertilizer response trials.
- Monitor the progress with electronic data collection in multi-location potato fertilizer response trials.
- Assist with the development of locally validated manuals on good agricultural practices for ware and seed potato.
Selection Criteria:
- BSc. in Agriculture or a related field, from a recognized University.
- At least five years’ experience required in a similar position.
- Extensive experience in sweetpotato and/or potato seed systems and agronomy is essential.
- Previous working experience in CIP projects is preferred.
- In-depth knowledge of the agricultural sector in Rwanda is desirable.
- Capacity to interact with key stakeholders in the agriculture sector in Rwanda, including government, research institutions and private sector.
- Advanced level of MS Office.
- Advanced knowledge of database work.
- Skills in data base management.
- Experience in experiments execution in different settings.
- Strong team player, self-motivated, goal-oriented and committed to shared goals.
- Fluent in Kinyarwanda.
- Advanced written and oral communication skills in English.
What are the conditions?
This is a national consultancy position limited to Rwandese nationals and permanent residents only. The consultancy will be for a period of six months.
